Creative Cardio Ideas

jump ropeMany people immediately think of running when it comes to adding Cardio to their next workout. Although running, jogging, and walking are some of the most popular forms of cardio, they can also be some of the most boring if you repeat the same routine day after day after day.

Rather than let your cardio routine drag you down into a weight loss rut, we’ve put together a list of ideas on how to add a little more fun to your cardio. With a little creativity, you can add a little bounce to your step and turn your cardio into the best part of your workout.

Creative Cardio

1. Master those stairs: Don’t look at us that way -just because those extra flights of stairs tend to resemble the mountain of doom doesn’t mean that they can’t be a fun and challenging way to lose weight. Whether they’re in your home or in the office, the stairs can easily work those major muscle groups while tightening your calves, thighs, and glutes.

If you feel like simply walking up and down the stairs is a little boring, try taking them two at a time.

2. Skip to the Loo: When you were a kid, skipping seemed like the easiest activity in the world. As an adult, although you may find yourself feeling a little silly, skipping can be a heart pumping exercise. Skip your way out to the mailbox and even skip some more as you delivery laundry to your bedroom. You could even skip to the loo if you like.

3. Jump for Joy: Speaking of childhood aerobics, jumping is also an effective yet fun form of cardio that can get your heart rate up and your blood pumping. Whether you simply jump for joy or start skipping rope, by the time you’re finished jumping, your legs will thank you for a job well done.

4. Dance to your own beat: Grab your headphones and jam out to your favorite tunes. Whether you’re a Michael Jackson fan or an avid listener of Linkin Park, dancing to an upbeat song is a great way to add in cardio without having to do the same boring routine every day. Add a little improv and let your arms and legs go wild.

5. Go for Yoga: Not all forms of yoga involve calmly stretching from one pose to another as if you were nothing more than a leaf in the wind. In fact some types of cardio will leave you in a sweat and your heart racing with the challenge.

Final Thoughts

Just because most weight loss enthusiasts recommend running or jogging in order to promote weight loss doesn’t mean that your cardio has to be the most boring part of your routine. As long as those muscles are moving and your heartrate is up, you can turn even a simple task of folding laundry (when accompanied by jumping squats) in to a full-on workout. Keep it creative and fun, and you’ll never be bored by your cardio routine.

Resisting the Christmas Blues

Christmas bluesWhat is often known as the most wonderful time of the year becomes the worst time of the year. People are often pulling their hair out trying to get everything done, drinking to reduce stress and worries, and even overeating. When you begin to dread the holidays instead of look forward to them than you know you have the Christmas Blues. Below are a few tips to a happier holiday.

Memoirs

Remember two years ago when you went to DisneyWorld for your Honeymoon during Christmas? Now all you have is a 5ft tree and handmade stockings. While remembering Christmas past is fun, it is wise to keep in mind that not every Christmas will be the same. Remember that some things must change, you will have kids, or your mother will forget you. Look for the good in your holidays to have a more meaningful time.

Budgeting

Christmas holds more meaning if you are not spending it worrying about how you are going to afford you child’s xBox. Before the start of the holidays, check your finances and make budgets for everything going on. Make a budget for presents, food, and travel expenses. Also, remember to be realistic, if you are not, than the whole idea of making a budget is pointless. Once you do this, financial problems will no longer be a factor to your Christmas blues.

The True Meaning of Christmas

The most important thing to remember is the true meaning of Christmas. Too often we forget that this season is a time of giving, not jealousy and selfishness. We need to remember to be nice to others, enjoy our time, and not plan the perfect Christmas party. If you keep these things in mind, you could be well on your way to curing the Christmas Blues.

Decreasing your Stress during the Holidays

stressAs the most highly anticipated part of the year rolls around, people are bustling around to get the last minute things done. There are things to plan, toys to buy, and food to cook. However, what once was a time of joy and merriment is now a time of stress and tears. If you are not prepared this holiday season, then expect to face the storm of stress.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!

Preparation can be the key to success in most situations. If you take the time to plan out that party you are throwing over new year’s eve instead of just winging it, you will most likely be relaxed and enjoying the party.

Another key element is to make lists. Make lists of the food you need to buy, of the presents you need to make or purchase, and a list of the people who are coming. With careful planning and preparation, you can have a happy and relaxed holiday.

One thing to keep in mind is not to plan everything to a T.

Flexibility is the Key!

Things will go wrong. Your mother’s plane will be late, Suzie’s hair won’t curl just right, or Grandpa won’t want to get into the picture. The best attitude for these situations is the hope for the best but expect the worst. Have a plan B for most of your plans. So when your power goes out because of a snow storm, you can still have a jolly holiday.

Enlist in Help

Sometimes people like to do things alone. However most people will find that a little bit of help can go a long way. Even talking out your plans with a friend can help. They can give you advice and tips on your planning.

Lastly, remember to have fun during the holidays and to love your friends and family. It is a time of selflessness and service.

A way to Fix Restlessness

sleepingMany people suffer from lack of sleep, they try various things to help them like a new mattress, Tylenol PM, or even a warm bath. If you are still struggling to get sleep after trying these or don’t want to be on a pill anymore, try exercising more to get the rest your body deserves.

Exercise can be the cure to a sleepless night according to researchers. The only trick is to know how to make use of it correctly. People who have researched when to exercise have said that it is best to exercise two times a day to get the best sleep possible.

Morning Exercise

When you wake up in the morning, your brain is generally foggy from sleep. Going out for a jog in the morning can help give you alertness and stimulate endorphins. Exercising in the morning can help improve you capability to work and remain focused. Another great way to fix your schedule is by exercising outdoors. The natural light will help tell your brain that you are up at the correct time.

Late Afternoon Exercise

Exercising again in the late afternoon has proven to help fix sleep problems as well. Researchers say that at night your body temperature will decrease; if you exercise at night, this will help your body’s natural progression. This will enable your body to get the proper amount of sleep it needs.

Patience is the Key!

exercise

Remembering to be patient can be a difficult thing to remember when you are going through a rough time. You wish your sleep could just fix in a day and be done with it. However, your sleep didn’t get messed up in one day, so it shouldn’t get fixed in one either. Keep in mind that it could take between 2 to 6 weeks before you start to notice any change with your sleep.

Weight Watchers

A recent scientific study showed that overweight and obese adults who followed the Weight Watcher’s program lost more than twice as much weight than others who received periodic weight loss advice from a doctor. The yearlong study included 772 men and women in England, Australia and Germany in which patients who visited their doctor seeking weight loss advice were either randomly awarded a free 12 month membership to Weight Watchers or encouraged to visit their doctor once a month.

61% of the Weight Watcher group lost an average of 15 pounds, while 54% of group which visited their doctor once a month lost an average of 7 pounds. Michael Jensen, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic, was not surprised by the results, stating that programs like Weight Watchers which stress accountability are more likely to produce effective results. He also stated that the results from the monthly doctor visits are lower because general practitioners are not fully dedicated weight loss specialists.

Never been to a Weight Watchers weekly meeting? Here is how it works. When you sign up for the program, Weight Watchers will set up a personalized weight loss program which gives a point value to every food you eat. Want to eat chocolate cake? Go ahead, but realize that you only have a certain amount of points you can consume per day and that cake will take up a huge chunk of that. The program also provides you with an exercise program that goes along with its diet portion. Probably the most effective part of Weight Watchers are the weekly meetings in which a local Weight Watchers professional is on hand to privately weigh you in, encourage you and provide answers to any questions you might have. Regular meetings with the same people provide a “group spirit” which has been shown to encourage more effective weight loss.

While Weight Watchers isn’t for everyone (it can cost up to $500 per year and the weekly meetings may not fit every schedule), this study makes a good point. Frequent accountability, coupled with a structured diet and exercise plan are more effective than merely setting a goal or getting advice from a doctor.

How to Treat Migraines

Most normal headaches are caused by stress or dehydration, but migraines don’t always follow that pattern. They are seemingly random at times, and can often leave the sufferer debilitated.

If this happens to you regularly, you should seek professional help as it may be an indication of a more serious condition. If you just get migraines occasionally and are looking for ways to relieve this temporary pain, we have researched the most effective solutions for you.

1.Be aware of your sleeping habits. If you can, try to lie down when the headache occurs and try to establish a steady sleeping routine. Doctors say that in terms of migraines, oversleeping can be just as bad for you as under-sleeping. To minimize the possibility of future migraines, try to sleep 6 to 8 hours a night.

2. Avoid bright lights. If possible, go into a dark room. Light can irritate the condition, as many find that their eyes are more sensitive when they are experiencing a migraine. If you are prone to migraines, specialists suggest that you carry a thick, dark cloth with you to place over your eyes if you are unable to find a dark place to lie down.

3. Try relaxation exercises. Yoga, muscle relaxation, or meditation – these can all help you. These are low-impact exercises that can increase blood flow and decrease tension. If that is not possible, then at least try to spend a half hour every day doing something that relaxes you and is enjoyable – preferably something that doesn’t strain your eyes.

4. Use a cold compress. Put the compress on the back of your neck or directly on your head. With the ice pack on your neck, apply gentle pressure to the aching areas with your fingertips. One doctor recommended, for those who dislike the cold compress on their face, that migraine sufferers put their hand on cold water for as long as possible, then make rapid fists, increasing blood flow. This, he says, is just as effective as a compress on the head.

5. Keep a migraine journal. Not exactly a juicy read, but research has shown that those who write down the conditions in which their migraines occur are much more likely to figure out what triggers them and thereby eliminate or greatly reduce migraines. Also record which treatment worked and which didn’t – it will save you the trouble next time.
If you regularly experience signs and symptoms of migraine attacks, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your headaches and decide on a treatment plan. Bring your migraine journal and be prepared to discuss the conditions of your migraines and how you have treated them. If these tips do not eliminate the migraine, we would suggest that you see a doctor for more long term solutions.

SuperFoods That Kids Need

1. Eggs

Eggs are packed with protein, and they’re one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D, which helps the body to absorb calcium. Eating protein at breakfast helps kids feel satisfied longer, which means that you have to prepare fewer mid-morning snacks.

2. Oatmeal

Served with some sugar and milk, oatmeal is the perfect hearty breakfast to fuel your child’s day. Not only that, but research shows that kids who eat oatmeal are better able to concentrate and pay attention in school. Fiber-rich whole grains, like oatmeal, digest slowly, providing kids with a steady stream of energy.

3. Fruit

Even the most picky eaters will find some kind of fruit that they enjoy. Try and give your child a variety of fruits, since they each have a different set of essential vitamins and minerals.

4. Nuts

Nuts are made of healthy fats, which kids need for growth and development, as well as for heart health. A handful of nuts in the morning gives your kids a burst of energy to keep them going.

5. Milk

We all know that protein and calcium in dairy products provide fuel for the brain and body. Protein helps build brain tissue, while milk’s calcium keeps bones and teeth strong.

6. Tomatoes

Cooking tomatoes makes this healthy fruit even healthier. Pairing tomatoes with a good fat, like olive oil, helps the body absorb more. Ways to get them in your kid’s diet: Pizza and pasta sauces are good.

7. Fish

Fish contains heart-healthy omega-3 fats, which are also known to boost brain development, fend off depression, and have superb anti-inflammatory powers. If your child doesn’t like fish, try serving it with an orange or teriyaki glaze or pairing it with food that they do like, like pasta or salad.

8. Cinammon

This one isn’t too hard. Research shows that this spice can help regulate blood sugar, which may also minimize energy crashes. Ways to get it in your kid’s diet: Sprinkle it on oatmeal, pancakes, cold cereal, and yogurt, and add a few extra dashes of cinnamon to muffin or quick-bread recipes that call for it. Whatever they like, just put a dash of cinnamon in.

5 Weird and Gross Home Remedies That Don’t Work

As modern medicine has cures and…well…medicine for most ailments, there are still some that swear by the old home remedies. Many of these work out, though some obviously don’t. Here are some that you might not want to try.

1. Wearing a headband soaked in rubbing alcohol will not cure your headache. In fact, the pungent smell of the alcohol might actually make your headache worse, and high levels of alcohol absorbed through the skin can induce nausea.

2. Taking a warm cabbage and milk slime bath will not help with back pain. I’m happy to hear it, because that sounds pretty nasty.

3. Putting mayonnaise on a burn will not help it feel better. That’s another relieving one. I think most people, after having sustained a burn, would rather not put greasy mayonnaise on their body.

4. Taking apple cider vinegar instead of antacids will not cure heartburn. And it tastes nasty. My general attitude is that if it tastes awful, don’t eat it.

5. Lighting a match by a tick does not safely remove it from your skin. Ticks are nasty enough as it is, but I surely would not want one half melted into my skin. Doctors say that most ticks require manual extraction.
